Sony Ericsson C905

18sonyericssonc905

The Sony Ericsson C905 is set to become the new standard for camera phones when it's released in October (just in time for Christmas!). Forget the 5 megapixel camera phones of last year - the C905 comes with a huge 8 megapixel camera, some serious camera wizardry to get the best out of all those pixels, and a huge range of other features, such as HSDPA, WiFi and aGPS, as well.

First of all, an overview of the C905. It is, as you can see, a slider phone, with a keypad that's apparently extremely easy to use, and a simple sliding design that actually looks rather good.

What all this means is that the Sony Ericsson C905 isn't just a camera phone - it's actually more camera than phone, and is set raise the bar for camera phone when it launches in October.

An 8 megapixel camera takes photos at a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels, which leads to photos that can be blown up to ridiculous sizes without loss of resolution or detail. However, in doing so, any shortcomings from the camera are also made immediately apparent. So confident are Sony Ericsson with the quality of their C905's pics, though, that during its launch they displayed its photos on A3 display boards - that's 297mm x 420mm - and there wasn't a trace of any picture degradation.

The C905's face detection feature will also ensure that people's faces always remain in focus when you're taking a pic, regardless of whether there's one, two or three people in the shot. There's the usual array of image improvement software, including digital stabilization, smart contrast (which helps ensure you don't over-expose your subject) and red-eye reduction. There are also several different modes that you can shoot with, including panorama for extra wide shots.

There are even a couple of applications that make use of the camera in innovative ways. CamPlus, for example, is a Java application that lets you take time-lapse photographs of a sense at time intervals that you define, and also lets you take photos whenever any motion is detected within the camera's field of vision.

Feature:

  • GPS and aGPS
  • USB support
  • Bluetooth™ technology
  • Wi-Fi™
  • Modem
  • DLNA™ support, letting you share your pics and vids wirelessly across hundreds of other devices
  • Video streaming, recording and playback
  • MP3 player
  • FM radio
  • TV-Out
  • GeoTagging and mobile blogging features

Camera Spesification:

  • 8.1 megapixel camera

Samsung Pixon M8800

samsung M8800(2)

The Pixon has evolved from the successful F480 mobile phone and rather than being a simple cosmetic overhaul, this is a significant upgrade to the camera (8 MegaPixel) and the touch operating system. So much so that the Pixon will most likely spawn an entire range of similarly equipped handsets in the future.

Samsung Pixon embeds a 3.2-inch TFT touchscreen, supporting 262k colors and featuring accelerometer sensor. The colors displayed on the screen are well-balanced, contrast is very good and brightness can be set to any desired level. Moreover, it's perfectly visible in the sunlight, which is a wonder for a Samsung device, but we're talking about a high-end phone after all, so it should have been pretty obvious. I was very happy to find that the phone featured the Haptic technology, so the feedback when using the touchscreen is cool to experience.

Furthermore, the haptic feedback is very responsive and realistic, so touching a key displayed on the screen is like actually pressing it. The haptic feedback can be turned off/on from the Settings menu. The only drawback I noticed was a little lag when the accelerometer sensor is activated and the screen is turned in landscape mode, but I'm sure this will be corrected in the final version.

The 8 Megapixel camera features flash, autofocus, anti-shake digital image stabilization and geotagging support. It has some protective lens cover that opens when the camera button is pressed. I was disappointed by the LED flash, as I expected Samsung to include a Xenon flash. Consequently, don't bother to make night pictures, unless you are really close to the subject.

The maximum resolution of the pictures is 3264 x 2448 pixels, while movies can be recorded using a maximum resolution of 720x480 pixels. Camera interface is like nothing you are used to, and more user-friendly than with any other Samsung device. You are always 1 or 2 clicks on the touchscreen away from any setting or function of it. Even if it's just a sample version of the product, quality of the pictures is exceptionally good. The shots included below reveal astonishing pictures that cannot be compared with those taken with any other phone on the market that has less than an 8 Megapixel camera. The module camera doesn't lag, while the phone saves pictures extremely fast, even when the maximum resolution is used. You can easily take pictures in portrait or in landscape mode.

The phone can record QVGA movies at 30fps with no problem, and is one of the best clip recorders on the market. Another cool option is the Slow motion function, which enables the device to capture QVGA slow motion movies at 120fps. Unfortunately, this function doesn't work well with this sample device, but it's a very nice addition to the camera.

The Pixon’s Assisted GPS feature will not only guide you to your destination but also allow geo-tagging of your pictures, something which will start to become more popular when it’s finally integrated into social networking websites. Even before this time, the geo-tag makes a great addition to pictures taken on a holiday or for work-related situations. Another smart feature is the accelerometer which as well as rotating the screen automatically, works well with the photo album, where a simple tilt of the handset sees the pictures scroll across the screen accordingly.

Feature:

  • 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and lens protection
  • Camera geo-tagging, auto-panorama shot, face, smile and blink detection, digital image stabilization
  • 3.2" 256K-color TFT LCD touchscreen display of WQVGA resolution
  • WVGA video recording at 30fps
  • Quad-band GSM support
  • 3G with HSDPA support
  • Slimmest 8MP phone
  • GPS receiver
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Bluetooth and USB v2.0
  • microSD card slot
  • DivX, XviD and MP4 video player
  • SRS (Surround Sound System) Virtual 5.1CH
  • TV out functionality
  • 200 MB internal memory
  • Landscape on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboard
  • Accelerometer sensor
  • Multitasking
  • Office document viewer
  • ShoZu integration (direct image and video uploads)

Disadvantages:

  • Stylus as dongle only, no stylus compartment
  • No Wi-Fi, GPS for geotagging only
  • Camera performance well below Samsung i8510 INNOV8 standard
  • No smart dialing

Samsung F480

The first Samsung non-smart phones with a large touch screen were based on the Croix interface. It had a ton of drawbacks – monochrome, ugly and not very user-friendly.

Apparently, the manufacturer has decided to fix that and has developed new software, called TouchWiz. Its debut was in the F480, which is the subject of our review. This is a high-end device with a very attractive appearance, equipped with a 2.8” display, a 5-megapixel camera and HDSPA 7.2Mbps support.

There are two options for the battery lid – with and without a leather protector for the front side. Thanks to it you can avoid scratching and contaminating the screen, but at the same time, it will prevent you from using the phone with ease (especially when making calls). We are not happy that a stylish case is not included in the package, since we think it would have done a better job and could have been made to fit the design of the device.

Most of the front is taken by the 2.8” touch display, supporting a resolution of 240х320 pixels and 262k colors. It reacts only when touched by fingers (every touch can be accompanied by a sound and/or vibration), which is inconvenient when wearing gloves. Luckily, it has a great sensitivity, although a step behind the leader in this aspect – iPhone. The screen offers quite good colors, but there’s more to ask detail-wise. The same goes for using the phone in direct sunlight; it is usable, but the mirror-like effect prevents the user from seeing clearly.

Over the display, we have the video calling camera and the speaker, and under it are located the reject/accept buttons and one, activating the shortcut menu. They are all very user-friendly with the only thing being problematic is the lack of a clearly felt stroke when pressed.

There are only three more buttons to be found on the body – the volume rocker, for locking and the camera dedicated one. They are located respectively on the left (next to the microSD card slot), upper and right side (where is the charger/data cable/handsfree connector). The “hold” button is the only problematic one, assigned to lock/unlock the device. The trouble comes from its small size and the unpleasant pressing

On the back of the phone is located the 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. As we’ve already mentioned, there are two options for the battery lid, but the metal one fits the overall look of the phone much better. Unfortunately, it will not protect the F480 from dust and fingerprints.

As a whole, Samsung F480 is one very attractive phone and it will surely draw people’s attention. Its clear design resembles the top fashion models BDV-247670-BDV

Key Features:

  • Ample 2.8" 262K touchscreen color display of QVGA resolution
  • Touch-operated flash UI
  • 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash

  • 228MB of internal memory
  • microSD card slot
  • Widgets
  • Excellent haptics
  • FM radio with RDS
