Sony Ericsson C905

18sonyericssonc905

The Sony Ericsson C905 is set to become the new standard for camera phones when it's released in October (just in time for Christmas!). Forget the 5 megapixel camera phones of last year - the C905 comes with a huge 8 megapixel camera, some serious camera wizardry to get the best out of all those pixels, and a huge range of other features, such as HSDPA, WiFi and aGPS, as well.

First of all, an overview of the C905. It is, as you can see, a slider phone, with a keypad that's apparently extremely easy to use, and a simple sliding design that actually looks rather good.

What all this means is that the Sony Ericsson C905 isn't just a camera phone - it's actually more camera than phone, and is set raise the bar for camera phone when it launches in October.

An 8 megapixel camera takes photos at a resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels, which leads to photos that can be blown up to ridiculous sizes without loss of resolution or detail. However, in doing so, any shortcomings from the camera are also made immediately apparent. So confident are Sony Ericsson with the quality of their C905's pics, though, that during its launch they displayed its photos on A3 display boards - that's 297mm x 420mm - and there wasn't a trace of any picture degradation.

The C905's face detection feature will also ensure that people's faces always remain in focus when you're taking a pic, regardless of whether there's one, two or three people in the shot. There's the usual array of image improvement software, including digital stabilization, smart contrast (which helps ensure you don't over-expose your subject) and red-eye reduction. There are also several different modes that you can shoot with, including panorama for extra wide shots.

There are even a couple of applications that make use of the camera in innovative ways. CamPlus, for example, is a Java application that lets you take time-lapse photographs of a sense at time intervals that you define, and also lets you take photos whenever any motion is detected within the camera's field of vision.

Feature:

  • GPS and aGPS
  • USB support
  • Bluetooth™ technology
  • Wi-Fi™
  • Modem
  • DLNA™ support, letting you share your pics and vids wirelessly across hundreds of other devices
  • Video streaming, recording and playback
  • MP3 player
  • FM radio
  • TV-Out
  • GeoTagging and mobile blogging features

Camera Spesification:

  • 8.1 megapixel camera
  • Xenon flash
  • Smart contrast
  • Auto focus Face detection
  • Image stabilizer
  • Digital zoom – up to 16x
  • Red-eye reduction

Samsung Pixon M8800

samsung M8800(2)

The Pixon has evolved from the successful F480 mobile phone and rather than being a simple cosmetic overhaul, this is a significant upgrade to the camera (8 MegaPixel) and the touch operating system. So much so that the Pixon will most likely spawn an entire range of similarly equipped handsets in the future.

Samsung Pixon embeds a 3.2-inch TFT touchscreen, supporting 262k colors and featuring accelerometer sensor. The colors displayed on the screen are well-balanced, contrast is very good and brightness can be set to any desired level. Moreover, it's perfectly visible in the sunlight, which is a wonder for a Samsung device, but we're talking about a high-end phone after all, so it should have been pretty obvious. I was very happy to find that the phone featured the Haptic technology, so the feedback when using the touchscreen is cool to experience.

Furthermore, the haptic feedback is very responsive and realistic, so touching a key displayed on the screen is like actually pressing it. The haptic feedback can be turned off/on from the Settings menu. The only drawback I noticed was a little lag when the accelerometer sensor is activated and the screen is turned in landscape mode, but I'm sure this will be corrected in the final version.

The 8 Megapixel camera features flash, autofocus, anti-shake digital image stabilization and geotagging support. It has some protective lens cover that opens when the camera button is pressed. I was disappointed by the LED flash, as I expected Samsung to include a Xenon flash. Consequently, don't bother to make night pictures, unless you are really close to the subject.

The maximum resolution of the pictures is 3264 x 2448 pixels, while movies can be recorded using a maximum resolution of 720x480 pixels. Camera interface is like nothing you are used to, and more user-friendly than with any other Samsung device. You are always 1 or 2 clicks on the touchscreen away from any setting or function of it. Even if it's just a sample version of the product, quality of the pictures is exceptionally good. The shots included below reveal astonishing pictures that cannot be compared with those taken with any other phone on the market that has less than an 8 Megapixel camera. The module camera doesn't lag, while the phone saves pictures extremely fast, even when the maximum resolution is used. You can easily take pictures in portrait or in landscape mode.

The phone can record QVGA movies at 30fps with no problem, and is one of the best clip recorders on the market. Another cool option is the Slow motion function, which enables the device to capture QVGA slow motion movies at 120fps. Unfortunately, this function doesn't work well with this sample device, but it's a very nice addition to the camera.

The Pixon’s Assisted GPS feature will not only guide you to your destination but also allow geo-tagging of your pictures, something which will start to become more popular when it’s finally integrated into social networking websites. Even before this time, the geo-tag makes a great addition to pictures taken on a holiday or for work-related situations. Another smart feature is the accelerometer which as well as rotating the screen automatically, works well with the photo album, where a simple tilt of the handset sees the pictures scroll across the screen accordingly.

Feature:

  • 8 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash and lens protection
  • Camera geo-tagging, auto-panorama shot, face, smile and blink detection, digital image stabilization
  • 3.2" 256K-color TFT LCD touchscreen display of WQVGA resolution
  • WVGA video recording at 30fps
  • Quad-band GSM support
  • 3G with HSDPA support
  • Slimmest 8MP phone
  • GPS receiver
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Bluetooth and USB v2.0
  • microSD card slot
  • DivX, XviD and MP4 video player
  • SRS (Surround Sound System) Virtual 5.1CH
  • TV out functionality
  • 200 MB internal memory
  • Landscape on-screen virtual QWERTY keyboard
  • Accelerometer sensor
  • Multitasking
  • Office document viewer
  • ShoZu integration (direct image and video uploads)

Disadvantages:

  • Stylus as dongle only, no stylus compartment
  • No Wi-Fi, GPS for geotagging only
  • Camera performance well below Samsung i8510 INNOV8 standard
  • No smart dialing

Samsung F480

The first Samsung non-smart phones with a large touch screen were based on the Croix interface. It had a ton of drawbacks – monochrome, ugly and not very user-friendly.

Apparently, the manufacturer has decided to fix that and has developed new software, called TouchWiz. Its debut was in the F480, which is the subject of our review. This is a high-end device with a very attractive appearance, equipped with a 2.8” display, a 5-megapixel camera and HDSPA 7.2Mbps support.

There are two options for the battery lid – with and without a leather protector for the front side. Thanks to it you can avoid scratching and contaminating the screen, but at the same time, it will prevent you from using the phone with ease (especially when making calls). We are not happy that a stylish case is not included in the package, since we think it would have done a better job and could have been made to fit the design of the device.

Most of the front is taken by the 2.8” touch display, supporting a resolution of 240х320 pixels and 262k colors. It reacts only when touched by fingers (every touch can be accompanied by a sound and/or vibration), which is inconvenient when wearing gloves. Luckily, it has a great sensitivity, although a step behind the leader in this aspect – iPhone. The screen offers quite good colors, but there’s more to ask detail-wise. The same goes for using the phone in direct sunlight; it is usable, but the mirror-like effect prevents the user from seeing clearly.

Over the display, we have the video calling camera and the speaker, and under it are located the reject/accept buttons and one, activating the shortcut menu. They are all very user-friendly with the only thing being problematic is the lack of a clearly felt stroke when pressed.

There are only three more buttons to be found on the body – the volume rocker, for locking and the camera dedicated one. They are located respectively on the left (next to the microSD card slot), upper and right side (where is the charger/data cable/handsfree connector). The “hold” button is the only problematic one, assigned to lock/unlock the device. The trouble comes from its small size and the unpleasant pressing

On the back of the phone is located the 5-megapixel camera with LED flash. As we’ve already mentioned, there are two options for the battery lid, but the metal one fits the overall look of the phone much better. Unfortunately, it will not protect the F480 from dust and fingerprints.

As a whole, Samsung F480 is one very attractive phone and it will surely draw people’s attention. Its clear design resembles the top fashion models BDV-247670-BDV

Key Features:

  • Ample 2.8" 262K touchscreen color display of QVGA resolution
  • Touch-operated flash UI
  • 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and LED flash
  • Camera comes with face detection and wide dynamic range
  • 3G with HSDPA
  • Great design and high quality construction
  • 228MB of internal memory
  • microSD card slot
  • Widgets
  • Excellent haptics
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Great camera interface
  • EDGE, Bluetooth and USB connectivity
  • Great web browser

Main Disadvantages:

  • Tri-band only
  • Display legibility suffers under direct sunlight
  • No landscape mode and no virtual QWERTY keyboard
  • Fingerprint magnet
  • Inadequate flash for the camera
  • Video recording capabilities max out at QVGA resolution BDV-169637-BDV

Sony Ericsson W760

w760

Sony Ericsson W760 made a name for being the first Sony Ericson phone to offer an integrated GPS receiver. With a large QVGA display, stereo speakers, Media Center and the 3 megapixel camera on top, the W760 packs a nice punch. It's an exciting slider that may look no-thrills on the outside, but has all the prospects of becoming a bestseller.

Expected in Q2 2008 Sony Ericsson W760 may as well make this summer hotter. It's got nearly all the high-end Walkman stuff. Right from the very first moment we saw it, we were struck by the resemblance to Sony Ericsson W850. Both handsets share pretty much the same size, form factor and market positioning, so we think it's a safe bet the W760 is the true successor of W850, bringing the best of the Walkman range to the current Sony Ericsson lineup.

For starters, the W760 takes advantage of the proprietary Sony Ericsson Media Center enabling users to organize and enjoy all their multimedia files, be it music, video, photos, games or streaming content such as YouTube. The Sony Ericsson Media Center offers ease-of-use and rich functionality unmatched by current feature phones on the market.

The user experience with the Media Center is further enhanced by the built-in accelerometer that enables screen auto rotation, as well as Shake control. Speaking of multimedia, the W760 packs in the latest Walkman 3.0 player and even supports the SensMe mood recognition feature that allows creating playlists based on mood and tempo.

On top of that, you also get the benefit of the integrated GPS receiver - you can use it to geotag your photos, work out with the Tracker fitness application or use turn-by-turn navigation and Points of Interest search.

Key Features:

  • Quad-band GSM / EDGE / Tri-band UMTS / HSDPA
  • Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR
  • Interesting design
  • Built-in GPS receiver
  • 3 megapixel camera with geotagging
  • Speedy and impressive user interface
  • Walkman player with Shake control and SensMe
  • Media center
  • Stereo speakers
  • Lots of pre-installed applications and games
  • 2.2" QVGA TFT display
  • M2 memory card slot (1GB card included)
  • Built-in motion sensor
  • Good call quality and network reception strength
  • Bundled accessories

Main Disadvantages:

  • No video-call camera
  • Build quality issues
  • No WLAN
  • Camera has basic portrait interface and no autofocus
  • Integrated stereo speakers are not impressive neither in sound qiality, nor in loudness
  • Poor legibility under direct sunlight

Sony Ericsson W980

w980

Although primarily a music phone - hence the Walkman branding - the Sony Ericsson W980 comes laden with a none-too-shabby 3.2Mp camera with flash. This is more discreet than some onboard cameras. It's just below the clamshell handset's hinge and all but hidden by the soft-touch black rubber backing. This finish is not only protective; it also makes the phone feel better built than many other phones.

A fairly common complaint with both clamshell and slider phones is that they are too flimsy. This certainly isn't the case with the Sony Ericsson W980 - it's robust and its haptic (fingertip- and vibration-sensitive) menu controls mean you can access your media library and control the Walkman without having to flip it open.

The front of the Sony Ericsson W980 is covered in seethrough plastic. This pulsates gently with a white light as the phone quietly starts up and orange for a few seconds after you start a song playing (this can be deactivated if you wish). Place a finger on the central concave button on the front of this phone and you can instantly pause or resume a track.

However, the Sony Ericsson W980 also responds to a shake - if you've had enough of a particular song, you can jiggle the phone and something else will start playing.

We were also intrigued by a feature known as SenseMe. The tracks preloaded on the Sony Ericsson W980 - mainly but not exclusively classical - have been tagged according to their tempo and their mood. You use the left, right, up and down buttons to show where on the mood scale you are and the sort of music that will suit: happy, sad, fast or slow. The CD that comes with the Sony Ericsson W980 lets you add more tracks with mood information.

Given the 8GB memory on this phone, there's room for hundreds of albums. These can be transferred to the Sony Ericsson W980 via USB. As with the headphones Sony Ericsson supplies, the connection is a proprietary two-pronged one.

Once you've dragged and dropped music, photos and other media from your laptop or PC on to the Sony Ericsson W980's Sony Stick memory, it takes a few seconds for the handset memory to update itself. However, album art and full track details are preserved, as you'll see if you bring up the Properties for each song.

The Sony Ericsson W980's headphones are of Sony Ericsson's usual high-quality, in-ear variety with a clip for pegging them to your clothes and a button for taking phone calls. (Full voice commands and voice dialling are supported.) The earphones and the connector separate out so you can use the earphones with other music players too, as long as they have a 3.5mm jack.

You can identify unknown tracks should something playing on the FM radio take your fancy - there's a shortcut to a TrackID feature that involves you telling it when to start craning its virtual ears to make out that oh-so-familiar tune. It's also possible to get musical suggestions based on what's currently playing and to stream music from the mobile web using a service called PlayNow. The idea here is that you listen to a song and get so attached to it (or spend a fortune streaming it), that you then shell out £3 to buy it outright.

You can subscribe to podcasts, get RSS feeds of news stories and other items including thumbnail images. These are accessible in the web feeds menu under the Walkman options.

Another curiosity about the Sony Ericsson W980 - but one we liked - was Walk Mate. This is a movement tracker that offers the ability to keep track of how far we'd walked or run in a day - a nice use of the haptics of this phone.

Key Features:

  • 2.2" 262K-color TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution
  • 3 megapixel camera
  • 8 GB of onboard memory
  • FM transmitter
  • Great user interface
  • 3G with HSDPA

Nokia 5320 Xpress Music

nokia 5320

We're talking XpressMusic, so we just have to say it: the 5320 makes a notable step up in audio quality. Still not the best in business, but it's way to go. The distinct youthful appeal is both a blessing and a curse, as it may put off those who favor smartphone power over music skill. There's some questionable design decisions too. They got rid of the swivel and, however subjective, possibly lost some of the charisma. Plus, the 5320 is definitely low key even compared to the way more modest 5310.

The 15-months-old 5700 was well due for an upgrade, so a youthful music-centered Symbian phone has its reasons to hope for a success. The improved sound quality, FP2, the doubled RAM and the more compact size sound right but the 5700 has stereo speakers, and a better display and keypad.

The lack of Wi-Fi however is still a downer and so is the smallish display. We do agree that there aren't many Symbians in this price range to feature Wi-Fi but that doesn't make the 5320 any less exposed to pressure.

The 5320 stays faithful to the XpressMusic-on-Symbian concept and makes it hard to decide whether smartphone strength or the music heart give it the extra edge. It sounds like we grew older overnight, but this time the young targeting somehow just couldn't have been more distinct. With that in mind, Nokia 5320 was just released and even a small price drop in the coming weeks may do wonders for it.

Key Feature:

  • 2" 262K-color display of QVGA resolution
  • Symbian 9.3 OS with S60 3.2 UI
  • ARM 11 369 MHz CPU and 128MB of RAM
  • 140 MB of user memory
  • microSD slot with support for up to 8GB, 512MB or 1GB card in the retail package
  • 3G with HSDPA support
  • Bluetooth and USB v2.0
  • 2 megapixel fixed-focus camera

  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Dedicated music controls
  • Music-centric Active Standby plug-in
  • Very good loudspeaker performance
  • Compact body and light weight
  • Cool handsfree set in the retail package

Main Disadvantages:

  • QVGA at 15fps video recording max
  • Poor battery life
  • Smallish display
  • No Wi-Fi
  • N-gage gaming support is still in the works
  • Audio quality is good but not great

Nokia N96

Accessing internet videos is quick and simple. The Nokia N96 supports common video formats including MPEG-4, Windows Media Video and Flash Video, making favorite videos easy to view.

Transferring and accessing videos is even faster with the high-speed USB 2.0 connection and WLAN and HSDPA support. In select markets, the integrated DVB-H receiver offers live broadcast TV with an automatically updating program guide.

The massive memory can store up to 40 hours of video content. The storage capacity of the Nokia N96 can even be further expanded with an optional microSD card, such as the new Nokia 8GB microSDHC Card MU-43 which increases the available memory of the Nokia N96 to a total of 24 GB. For added convenience, the Nokia N96 features a 'kickstand' on the back cover that allows for hands-free viewing.

The Nokia Video Center offers one place to discover and access a variety of mobile content ranging from movie trailers and comedy to news from world-leading content brands such as YouTube, Reuters, and Sony Pictures. The catalogue of internet video feeds is continually expanded with more regional and country specific content.

For a superb music experience, the Nokia N96 features media keys, a 3.5 mm headphone connector and built-in 3D stereo speakers. The Nokia Maps application offers richer maps with urban details and satellite views and has upgrade options such as City Guides, turn-by-turn pedestrian mode and voice-guided car navigation.

The Nokia N96 boasts a 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics, flash and video light. It allows DVD-like quality video capture at 30 frames per second. Further, with the integrated A-GPS, consumers can now 'geotag' their pictures with location data and share them with their online communities.
